Thousands Protest Media Crackdown, Journalist Arrests in Istanbul and Ankara

Thousands of journalists, human rights activists, and opposition representatives have taken to the streets in Istanbul and Ankara to protest mounting government pressure on independent media and a new wave of journalist arrests in Turkey.

Demonstrators carried photographs of detained journalists and called for an immediate end to security crackdowns, the reversal of media outlet closures, and an end to the appointment of government officials to manage news organizations. Protesters chanted slogans including “We can no longer breathe” and “You will not silence us,” expressing anger over what they described as a worsening climate for press freedom.

According to Deutsche Welle, protesters and human rights organizations view the measures as part of a coordinated campaign to restrict freedom of expression and suppress critical voices. Opposition party members and civil society groups have called for an end to media monopolization and the swift release of detained journalists.
