Amnesty International Reports Killings and Torture in Sudan’s El Fasher
——————————
Amnesty International has warned that civilians in El Fasher, North Darfur, continue to face arbitrary detention, torture, unlawful killings and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid one year after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the city.
In testimony collected in August and September 2026, the organization interviewed 25 civilians and humanitarian workers. Survivors reported being held in prisons and schools converted into detention centres, where detainees faced beatings, forced labour, inadequate food and water, and ransom demands. Women and children also suffered malnutrition, with some children requiring hospitalization after escaping.
The RSF reportedly maintains close surveillance over residents and humanitarian operations, while fewer than 70,000 people remain in the city, compared with a pre-war population exceeding one million. Humanitarian workers have warned that famine conditions could worsen in North Darfur in the coming months.
Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard called for an immediate ceasefire, accountability for abuses and the deployment of an international force to protect civilians. The organization also urged countries to halt arms transfers to all parties involved in Sudan’s conflict and called for the UN arms embargo to be extended beyond Darfur.
