Calgary Celebrates Muslim Canadian Heritage Throughout October
————————————–
The Canadian city of Calgary has designated October as Islamic History Month, recognizing the cultural heritage and contributions of Muslim Canadians to society. Mayor Jeromy Farkas announced the initiative during a city council meeting, highlighting Muslim contributions to education, healthcare, business, public service, the arts and community development.
This year’s celebrations focus on Islamic calligraphy, which the mayor described as a living artistic and cultural tradition connecting faith, creativity and heritage. The initiative aims to promote cultural diversity, mutual respect and understanding among different religious and cultural communities.
According to Canada’s 2021 census, Calgary was home to approximately 95,925 Muslims, representing nearly 7 percent of the city’s population and its third-largest religious group. The annual observance builds on a unanimous 2007 motion in Canada’s House of Commons to dedicate October to recognizing Muslim Canadian history and contributions.
