UN Warns of Escalating Extremist Violence in Mali Amid Coordinated Attacks
———————————————-
The United Nations has warned of rising violence in Mali following coordinated attacks on government forces across multiple regions, including Bamako, Gao, and Kidal. Gunfire and explosions were reported near military installations and in northern and central areas, with clashes continuing in several locations.
The attacks involved both separatist Tuareg rebels and armed extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Mali’s military authorities said they launched counter-offensives and claimed significant gains, though casualty figures remain disputed.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed “deep concern,” condemning the violence and calling for stronger protection of civilians and critical infrastructure. He urged greater international coordination to address the growing threat of violent extremism in the Sahel.
The crisis has persisted in Mali for over 14 years, with extremist groups expanding their influence across the region. The security situation deteriorated further after the withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA in 2023 and the exit of Western military forces.
Humanitarian agencies warn that millions remain in need of assistance as insecurity hampers relief efforts. The UN stressed that without stronger regional and international cooperation, instability could spread further across the Sahel.
