Armed Groups Ambush Malian Military Convoy in Gao Region

Mali’s military said it has launched a counteroperation after armed groups attacked a military convoy in the Gao region of northern Mali. The ambush was claimed by the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

The attack occurred near Tabankort as the convoy was traveling from the strategic town of Anefis to Gao. The two groups claimed they inflicted significant human and material losses on the Malian army, while the military has not released details of its casualties.

The Malian army said fighting was ongoing and that allied forces were also targeted during the attack. Reports indicated that the assault followed recent clashes in which government forces retook Anefis from armed groups.

Mali has faced a prolonged security crisis for more than a decade, with JNIM controlling large rural areas and the FLA seeking autonomy for northern regions. The ongoing conflict has contributed to a major humanitarian crisis, leaving millions of people in need of assistance.
