British Report Highlights Sharp Rise in Anti-Muslim Attacks in the UK
A recent report by the British organization Tell MAMA, which monitors anti-Muslim hatred, has revealed a sharp increase in incidents of harassment, incitement, and anti-Muslim attacks in the United Kingdom in recent years, amid warnings that hate speech is increasingly developing into violence and threats.
According to the report, recorded cases of harassment and incitement to hatred rose from 313 to more than 3,000 in less than five years, while attacks targeting Muslim properties, including homes, cars, and shops, increased nearly sixfold over four years.
A Tell MAMA official noted the growing seriousness of threats directed at Muslims and their families, pointing to recorded death threats. According to the organization, this reflects a shift in some forms of anti-Muslim hatred toward threats associated with violence.
In the same context, the Muslim Foundation in Britain reported documenting more than 70 attacks last year targeting mosques, prayer halls, and Islamic places of worship, including acts of vandalism, intimidation, and property damage.
Researchers and Muslim activists warned of the role of political rhetoric and media coverage in fueling negative stereotypes about Muslims, calling for more effective measures to combat incitement and hatred and to ensure the protection of places of worship and Muslim communities.
The Islamic Human Rights Commission in the UK, for its part, said that the spread of anti-Muslim rhetoric in some media and political circles, along with the activities of far-right groups, contributes to creating an environment that allows incidents of hatred and discrimination to increase.
According to the latest available data, a mosque or Islamic place of worship in the United Kingdom is attacked approximately once every five days. This has prompted Muslim organizations and activists to call for more serious action by the government, police, and judiciary to curb attacks, hold perpetrators accountable, and strengthen protection for Muslims and their religious institutions.
