“Asmaa Ali” Becomes the First Yemeni-American Judge in the United States
Attorney Asmaa Ali achieved a historic milestone after being appointed as a judge in the state of Mississippi, becoming the first Yemeni-American judge in the United States, following a nearly decade-long career in law and immigration cases.
Ali’s appointment was made by the mayor and unanimously approved by city council members after receiving recommendations from figures in the legal community. She revealed that she did not anticipate being selected for the position to the extent that she attended the day of the vote without bringing her judicial robe.
Asmaa stated that the moment of her appointment was a significant lesson in her journey, emphasizing the necessity of not allowing personal doubts to limit ambitions, while continuing to be prepared, work diligently, and have faith in one’s abilities.
Asmaa Ali hails from the district of Al-Shaar in the Ibb Governorate of Yemen, while her parents immigrated to the United States during the 1970s in pursuit of a better future for their children. She affirmed that her parents were a great source of inspiration and that their support contributed significantly to her completing her education, attending university, and then law school.
Ali worked for approximately ten years in law, focusing on immigration cases, and founded her own law firm, litigating cases in various courts across the United States. Throughout her career, she received several professional recognitions in the fields of law and legal leadership.
She confirmed that her judicial position represents not only a personal achievement but also an opportunity to serve the community and ensure justice for all appearing before the court, in addition to breaking barriers for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
It is planned for Asmaa Ali to continue her work as a lawyer specializing in immigration cases simultaneously with her judicial duties, in accordance with the regulations that allow some part-time municipal court judges in Mississippi to practice law.
Ali stressed the importance of separating her responsibilities in both fields, affirming that her work as a judge will be based on impartiality, justice, and the rule of law, and that her primary commitment on the judicial bench is to apply American law and the Constitution with integrity and fairness.
