EPA plans to eliminate science office, potentially laying off 1,000+ scientists

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to dissolve its Office of Research and Development, potentially laying off up to 1,155 scientists—about 75% of the office’s staff. The move, part of a broader push by the Trump administration to reduce federal spending, could severely impact research on air and water quality, toxicology, and pollution control.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has proposed cutting 65% of the agency’s budget, with spending over $50,000 now requiring approval from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Critics, including Rep. Zoe Lofgren, argue the plan is illegal and undermines public health protections.

An EPA spokesperson said no final decisions have been made, but environmental groups warn the move prioritizes industry interests over science. The plan is under White House review, sparking concerns about its impact on environmental regulations and public health safeguards.
