UN Warns of Over Twofold Increase in Humanitarian Aid Costs to Sudan Amid Middle East Crisis and Global Shipping Disruptions

The United Nations has reported that the cost of delivering humanitarian aid to Sudan has more than doubled due to disruptions in shipping routes and rising transportation costs caused by regional tensions.

More details in the following report:

The reported increase in costs has led to significant delays in aid delivery, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The crisis in Sudan, now recognized as one of the largest displacement situations in the world, is facing a new logistical challenge, with international aid deliveries struggling to keep up with the rising demand.

According to TRT Persian, the UN stated that the conflict in Iran and its impact on shipping routes has caused humanitarian aid costs to Sudan to increase by more than two times. The report highlights that insecurity in key maritime transport routes, particularly in strategic areas, has forced ships to take longer detours, raising insurance and fuel costs.

The report further noted that traditional aid routes via the Persian Gulf and regional ports have been disrupted, resulting in long delays for aid shipments. This situation has directly affected the speed of response to humanitarian needs in Sudan.

Sources within the UN confirmed that transportation costs for some aid shipments from regional logistics hubs to Sudan and neighboring countries have surged from approximately $927,000 to more than $1.8 million.

This sharp rise in costs has placed a heavy financial burden on humanitarian organizations and limited their operational capacity.

Humanitarian analysts have warned that if this trend continues, it could deepen the gap between the growing needs of displaced persons and the capacity of international organizations to respond.

As Sudan grapples with a widespread humanitarian crisis, any further delays in aid delivery could have severe consequences for the millions of displaced and affected individuals.
