Warming Waters Puts Black Sea’s Survival at Risk
Turkish Geological engineer, Osman Bektaş, has warned of the dire impact of global climate change on the Black Sea, Daily Sabah reported yesterday.
Bektaş notes that the continuous warming of the Black Sea is causing significant changes, including a weakening of the crucial intermediate layer that protects the upper layers from toxic hydrogen sulfide gas below, the article said.
He further explains that as the intermediate layer thins, the risk of the deep, toxic layer rising upwards increases, which could be catastrophic for surface-dwelling organisms. The expert points to data showing the oxygenated area of the Black Sea has already shrunk by a third, and warns that if this trend continues, the entire ecological balance of the sea will be destroyed.
Urgent action is needed to address the threat of climate change and save the Black Sea, Bektaş emphasizes.
