Tajikistan plans to generate all its electricity from green energy sources by 2032

In a major sustainable energy push, Tajikistan aims to generate all of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2032, President Emomali Rahmon announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at the International Water Conference in the capital Dushanbe, Rahmon stated that the country currently produces over 98% of its electricity from hydropower, and plans to increase this to 100% within the next decade, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Tajikistan President emphasized the critical role of water resources in achieving this green energy transition.

Tajikistan also expressed its readiness to promote regional cooperation and dialogue on key water-related issues within Central Asia.

As of 2022, the population of Tajikistan is 96% Muslim — mainly Hanafi Sunni with a small population of Ismaili Shia. The Asian country is a major generator of electricity in the region, boasting the largest hydropower plant in Central Asia.
