Above-Average Temperatures Expected During Upcoming Hajj Pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia warned pilgrims on Tuesday to prepare for searing heat during this year’s Hajj, one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world.

According to the country’s national meteorology center, average high temperatures are forecast to reach 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) during the Hajj, which begins on June 14. This represents a 1.5 to 2-degree increase above normal temperatures in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

“The expected climate for Hajj this year will witness an increase in average temperatures,” said meteorology center chief Ayman Ghulam.

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, as evidenced by the over 2,000 cases of heat-related illness reported during last year’s Hajj. At least 240 pilgrims, many from Indonesia, died during the event, though the causes were not specified.

Saudi authorities are urging the expected 1.8 million Muslim pilgrims to take precautions against the sweltering conditions, which will feature low humidity and virtually no rainfall. Proper hydration and heat-adaptive clothing will be crucial for completing the sacred rituals safely.
