UK moves to phase out smoking with lifetime ban for younger generations
—————————-
Lawmakers in the United Kingdom have advanced landmark legislation that would permanently bar younger generations from legally purchasing cigarettes, as part of broader efforts to reduce nicotine use.
Under the proposed Tobacco and Vapes Bill, the legal age for buying cigarettes would gradually increase each year. Individuals born on or after 1 January 2009 would never be legally allowed to purchase tobacco products, effectively creating a lifetime ban.
The legislation also introduces tighter restrictions on the sale, marketing, and accessibility of e-cigarettes, particularly targeting youth uptake.
The policy forms part of a wider public health strategy aimed at reducing smoking-related diseases. Health officials have described it as a major step toward creating a “smoke-free generation.”
The bill is expected to proceed toward final approval, with implementation planned in stages.
While public health advocates have welcomed the move, some critics have raised concerns about personal freedoms and potential unintended social consequences. The proposal continues to generate debate across the UK’s political and public spheres.
