UN Chief warns global safety deteriorating on daily basis
U.N. Secretary-General expressed concern about combatants in places like Congo, Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine, and Sudan ignoring international law and called for greater respect for human rights and peace worldwide, the Associated Press reported.
Addressing the U.N.’s top human rights body, Antonio Guterres warned that the world is becoming “less safe by the day” due to the increasing number of conflicts.
Guterres also emphasized the importance of human rights, called for debt relief for the world’s poorest countries, and urged increased spending to combat climate change.
During the session, the U.N. human rights chief, Volker Türk, also criticized attempts to undermine the U.N.’s legitimacy and work, describing it as destructive and betraying those who rely on it.
It should be mentioned that the U.N. Human Rights Council began a six-week session with a focus on various human rights crises, including the recent death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Russia.
