Bahrain holds more than 1,300 political, religious prisoners in prisons

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights called on the Bahraini authorities to initiate national reconciliation to achieve comprehensive political and human rights reforms, immediately release all political and ideological prisoners, provide justice for victims, and refrain from targeting dissidents and activists.

The rights organisation sent an urgent request to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, diplomatic missions and UN special rapporteurs to pressure the government of Bahrain to release political and ideological prisoners in the country.

In a statement on the occasion of “Nelson Mandela World Day” which falls on July 18, the center said: More than 1,300 Bahrainis who are political and ideological prisoners are in Bahrain’s prisons.  These people live in harsh and inhumane conditions and are under constant persecution and the risk of death.

The centre called on the members of the UN Human Rights Council to put pressure on Bahrain to comply with its recommendations and implement its human rights obligations.
