Pope Visits Canary Islands to Meet Migrants and Warn of Global Crises

The Pope arrived in the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa on Thursday, in the final stage of his week-long visit to Spain.
The main purpose of the visit is to meet migrants who have crossed dangerous Atlantic routes in an attempt to reach Europe.
During the trip, the Pope called on the international community to treat migrants more humanely and warned that escalating conflicts in different parts of the world are pushing humanity toward a deeper crisis.
According to Reuters, the visit will include a meeting with around 1,000 asylum seekers.
Juan Carlos Lorenzo, coordinator of the Spanish Commission for Refugees in the Canary Islands, described the event as an “important milestone.” He said the Pope’s presence represents strong support for the need to defend human rights, respect and preserve the dignity of all people, regardless of nationality or origin.
