Pope to Visit Europe’s Migration Flashpoints as Catholics Hope for Message of Reconciliation

Pope Leo XIV is set to visit two of Europe’s most sensitive migration hotspots, Spain’s Canary Islands next week and Italy’s Lampedusa island in early July, as Catholic leaders and migrants hope his presence will ease political tensions surrounding immigration.
The two island regions have become key entry points for thousands of mostly African migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings toward Europe. Although arrivals have declined this year, particularly in the Canary Islands, migration remains a deeply divisive political issue in Spain and Italy.
In the Canary Islands, Pope Leo is expected to visit the port of Arguineguín on June 11 to honor migrants who died or disappeared during the journey. He is also scheduled to meet migrants at a camp in Tenerife the following day.
The pope’s trips follow the legacy of Pope Francis, who made migration a central theme of his papacy and visited Lampedusa in 2013. Observers say Pope Leo’s early focus on migration signals that the issue will remain a major priority for the Catholic Church.
