Iraqi Football Association Asks FIFA to Allow Black Shirt Against Senegal to Mark Ashura
———————————–
The Iraqi Football Association has submitted an official request to FIFA seeking permission for Iraq’s national team to wear black shirts during its upcoming match against Senegal in the FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to media reports followed by Shia Waves Agency, the request carries symbolic significance, as the match coincides with the night of the 10th of Muharram, the anniversary of Ashura and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.
The match is scheduled to take place on June 26 in Toronto, Canada. The Iraqi federation is seeking to mark the religious occasion by allowing the national team to appear in black, a color associated with mourning and condolence in Iraq and across many Muslim communities.
Iraqi football fans are awaiting FIFA’s response, as international tournament regulations include specific rules regarding team kits, though exceptions may be considered in special cases.
Iraq is set to face Senegal in Group Nine, which also includes Norway and France, in a key match for the “Lions of Mesopotamia.”
Ashura holds deep religious and cultural significance in Iraq and the wider Islamic world, where annual commemorations recall the values of sacrifice, patience, and loyalty embodied by Imam Hussein and the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them.
