Shia Rights Group Condemns Taliban Policies Against Afghanistan’s Shia Community
———————————–
The International Organization for the Defense of Shia Rights has condemned what it described as escalating repression and systematic discrimination against followers of the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, in Afghanistan.
In a statement, the organization said it was following with deep concern the worsening human rights and religious freedom situation in the country, accusing the Taliban of adopting policies that target the Shia community and seek to impose a single religious interpretation.
The group said reported violations include pressure on Shia communities to follow Taliban religious teachings, restrictions on religious ceremonies, attacks on cultural and religious centers, political and social exclusion, and insufficient protection for Shia neighborhoods, schools and mosques.
It called on Afghanistan’s de facto authorities to immediately end all forms of repression and discrimination against Shia Muslims and to recognize their full rights as citizens.
The organization also urged respect for religious diversity, including the Ja‘fari school in personal status and religious practice, and called on the international community and UN bodies to move beyond statements of concern and apply real pressure to protect religious minorities in Afghanistan.
The group said Afghanistan’s stability cannot be achieved through force or the imposition of one view, but through peaceful coexistence, social justice and respect for human dignity.
