US Federal Court Moves to Expedite Afghan Asylum Cases, CAIR Welcomes Decision
————————————-
A US federal court has ruled that Afghan asylum seekers can proceed with legal challenges over prolonged delays in the processing of their cases, a decision welcomed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
The ruling allows plaintiffs to continue pursuing claims against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration authorities over what they describe as systematic delays in adjudicating asylum applications.
The case is part of broader legal efforts involving thousands of Afghan applicants, many of whom entered the United States following the 2021 evacuation under humanitarian programs. Advocacy groups say many applications have remained unresolved for years, leaving families in prolonged uncertainty.
CAIR welcomed the court’s decision, stating that previous delays had created widespread legal limbo for Afghan refugees and undermined their access to protection and stability. The organization emphasized the need for timely and fair processing of asylum claims.
Earlier data showed that US authorities had processed only a small portion of Afghan asylum applications within mandated timelines, despite legal requirements to decide cases within months.
