UK Considers Ban on First-Cousin Marriage Amid Health and Legal Debate
The British government is considering whether to support legislation banning first-cousin marriage, amid growing debate over the health, social, and legal implications of such marriages, as the issue remains under discussion in the House of Commons.
According to British media reports, a bill introduced by MP Luke Evans in the House of Commons in June has brought the issue back into the spotlight. Reports indicate that the government is considering the proposal and whether legislation would be the appropriate way to address concerns surrounding cousin marriage.
The debate intensified recently following the case of a Sudanese migrant, Israa Ibrahim, after a British court recognized her marriage to her cousin and allowed her to remain in the United Kingdom. The case sparked discussion over the relationship between this type of marriage and immigration and residency rules.
Supporters of a ban point to concerns over the increased likelihood of certain genetic disorders among children born to related parents. Opponents, however, argue that such legislation could disproportionately affect certain minority communities in which cousin marriage is more common.
The Guardian quoted a spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Justice as saying that the government recognizes the “serious concerns” raised over the issue and must consider whether introducing new legislation would be the best way to address them.
Reports indicate that first-cousin marriages account for less than one percent of all marriages in Britain, although their proportion is significantly higher in some communities, particularly among Britons of Pakistani heritage.
The bill is not expected to return to the House of Commons for its second reading before January, meaning that the political and public debate over the rationale for a potential ban and its implications for personal freedoms and social practices is likely to continue.
The British debate comes as other countries have taken similar steps. Norway banned first-cousin marriage in 2024, while Sweden is moving toward a similar ban. Several U.S. states also impose legal restrictions on such marriages.
