UNICEF Warns: One Million Afghan Children at Risk of Death Due to Severe Malnutrition

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has warned that nearly one million children in Afghanistan are at risk of death due to severe acute malnutrition, amid the worsening humanitarian crisis and declining funding allocated for relief and nutrition programs.

The organization reported today, Tuesday, August 25th, that approximately 3.7 million children in Afghanistan are suffering from wasting, a form of acute malnutrition, including about one million children who are facing severe life-threatening conditions unless they receive necessary treatment and aid.

The UNICEF representative in Afghanistan highlighted that the numbers reflect the severity of the situation faced by the children, warning that failure to take urgent actions and provide necessary support could put many of their lives at risk.

The crisis coincides with a decline in international funding allocated for humanitarian operations, which threatens the ability of relief organizations to provide therapeutic food and medical supplies and to reach the most vulnerable children, particularly in remote areas.

The situation is exacerbated by food insecurity and deteriorating economic conditions, increasing the pressure on Afghan families, with children being one of the most affected groups by the shortage of food and basic health services.

UNICEF emphasized the need for continued humanitarian funding and ensuring that food and treatment aid reach the needy children, warning that any further depletion of resources could worsen malnutrition rates and jeopardize the lives of more children.
