March 18 Marks First Spacewalk, Humanity’s Milestones in Space Exploration

March 18 is celebrated annually as the anniversary of the first-ever spacewalk, a groundbreaking event in human space exploration that opened new frontiers beyond our planet.

A spacewalk, or extravehicular activity, involves an astronaut leaving the spacecraft to operate in the vacuum of space. Such missions require specialized spacesuits that protect against cosmic radiation and the harsh conditions of space.

The first spacewalk took place on March 18, 1965, when Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov exited the Voskhod-2 spacecraft, paving the way for future exploration beyond Earth.

Another historic milestone came with the Apollo 11 mission. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface, spending approximately 2 hours and 32 minutes conducting activities on the Moon.

Later achievements include the first female spacewalker, Svetlana Savitskaya, and Anatoly Solovyov, who holds the record for the longest and most spacewalks, marking successive leaps in human capability in space.
