France and UK Mull New Measures as Channel Migrant Crossings Surge
………………..
A surge in migrant crossings from France to Britain is fueling political tension and renewed efforts to curb the journeys. This week, a dinghy carrying about 70 migrants crossed the Channel, highlighting what French police call “taxi boats” — vessels ferrying groups along northern beaches before crossing, media outlets reported.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces pressure from right-wing critics after pledging to dismantle trafficking networks. France and Britain are expected to announce new measures at a summit, possibly allowing French police to intercept migrant boats up to 300 meters from shore — an expansion of their current powers.
However, French police unions doubt the plan’s feasibility, citing overstretched resources and safety risks. Aid groups warn the measures could make crossings deadlier. Despite increased patrols and British-funded surveillance drones, migrant departures continue to rise. So far this year, nearly 20,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Britain by small boat, a 50% rise over 2024, partly due to favorable weather.
Experts argue that tougher maritime controls won’t address the conflicts and economic drivers pushing people to risk the journey. At camps near Dunkirk, migrants said they remain undeterred. “We are not afraid to die,” said one Afghan, determined to reach Britain despite repeated failed attempts.
