Europe Faces Intense Heatwave, Regions on High Alert

A severe heatwave is sweeping across Europe, prompting high alert levels and impacting daily life from France to Turkey, Arab News reported. A heat dome stretches from France, Portugal, and Spain to Turkey, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels.

In Seville, Spain, temperatures reached 42°C (108°F) on Monday. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the extreme heat “the new normal,” warning that climate change is making the planet hotter and more dangerous for all nations.

France, largely affected by the heatwave and lacking widespread air conditioning, has mobilized efforts to protect vulnerable groups such as the homeless, elderly, and outdoor workers. Tourists are adjusting plans.

Portugal issued red heat warnings for seven districts, with temperatures forecast to reach 43°C, following a record 46.6°C in June. Inland areas face high wildfire risks.

In Turkey, forest fires fueled by strong winds damaged holiday homes near Izmir, leading to the temporary closure of Izmir’s airport and evacuation of four villages as a precaution.

Italy’s Health Ministry declared a red alert in 21 cities, signaling emergency conditions affecting both healthy and vulnerable populations. Restrictions on outdoor work were imposed in regions like Liguria and Sicily.

Southern Germany expects temperatures up to 39°C (102°F) by midweek, with water usage limits imposed in some areas to conserve resources amid the heat.
