The Democratic Republic of Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak has become the fastest-spreading in the country’s history, with more than 2,000 deaths recorded as health authorities warn of accelerating transmission and growing challenges in controlling the epidemic.

According to government data released Tuesday, the outbreak has resulted in 4,381 confirmed Ebola cases, including 2,011 deaths, while 704 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals and isolation centers.

The sharp rise in fatalities comes nearly three months after the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, with recent figures indicating that the virus has spread rapidly in affected communities.

Health data shows that it took around nine weeks for the outbreak to reach the first 1,000 deaths, while the number of fatalities doubled to more than 2,000 within just three additional weeks. The rapid increase has raised concerns among response teams over delays in delivering medical assistance, supplies, and logistical support to remote areas.

The current outbreak presents additional challenges because it is associated with the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no widely approved vaccines or treatments currently available. This has complicated efforts to contain the virus compared with previous Ebola outbreaks.
