Albania Begins Formation of Independent “Bektashi” State: A Step Toward Promoting Tolerant Islam

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the initiation of the process to establish the “Independent Bektashi State” in Tirana.

He emphasized that the aim of this initiative is to preserve and enhance the culture of religious tolerance within society, and it is expected that the governing laws of this microstate will soon be drafted and approved.

On September 21, Edi Rama revealed the start of the formation of an independent microstate called the “Independent Bektashi State” in the capital, Tirana.

This microstate, covering an area of approximately 27 hectares, is set to become the smallest country in the world and will be led by Haji Baba Mondi, the elder of the Bektashi order.

The objective of establishing this state is allegedly to promote a tolerant version of Islam, which Albania takes pride in.

Edi Rama stated, “We must care for this treasure, which is religious tolerance, and never take it for granted.”

Legal teams are currently drafting the laws related to the sovereignty of this microstate, but it is still unclear which countries will recognize its sovereignty.

Edi Rama also pointed out that Iran is unlikely to recognize this microstate and noted the severing of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Tirana since 2022.

Haji Baba Mondi mentioned that this new government may require a small intelligence service but will not have an army or a court system.

The passport of this country has been chosen to be green, and Albania allows dual citizenship for its residents.

This initiative is seen as a new step in the history of Islam and religious tolerance in Europe.

It is noteworthy that Twelver Shia Muslims do not share the beliefs, rituals, and lifestyles associated with the various orders of Sufism and some have even considered their practices as deviations according to the fatwas of certain religious authorities.

However, peaceful coexistence and the freedom of individuals to choose their religion and way of life have always been emphasized by religious leaders and Shia authorities throughout history.

If the establishment of this microstate is not influenced by external agendas aimed at undermining the foundations of authentic Islam, it could serve as a valuable exercise in human democracy and promote a spirit of tolerance, especially among Muslims, drawing from the experiences and thoughts of humanity.
