Bangladesh: Weak Measles Vaccination Coverage Threatens Millions of Children

Bangladesh is facing one of the world’s most serious measles outbreaks in 2026, exposing gaps in vaccination coverage, health data and access to vulnerable children.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the country reported approximately 202,000 suspected cases between mid-March and October 9, 2026, including 22,000 laboratory-confirmed cases and 1,147 deaths. Children under five accounted for 94% of the fatalities.

A Reuters review of health documents and interviews with experts, healthcare workers, officials and bereaved families identified shortcomings in the emergency response, including incomplete vaccination coverage, reduced preparedness checks and difficulties reaching remote communities.

WHO vaccine adviser Mark Jit warned that the outbreak should serve as a serious warning to other countries, stressing that vaccination is safer, cheaper and more effective than responding to a public health emergency.

Despite government efforts to expand immunisation and continued WHO support, Bangladesh faces significant challenges in reaching underserved children and ensuring timely medical care, particularly as the country also battles a dengue outbreak.
