Iraq approves solar energy initiative to reduce electricity shortages

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has approved a plan to introduce solar energy systems for households, aiming to ease the burden on the national electricity grid and address ongoing electricity shortages, Rudaw reported.

The initiative involves contracting reputable companies and is part of a broader financial strategy from the electricity ministry to ensure adequate power supply for the upcoming summer.

The national power generation currently stands at 27,450 megawatts, while the demand is approximately 48,000 megawatts.

In late June, Iraq signed an investment license with TotalEnergies to develop a 1,000-megawatt power plant in southern Iraq, expected to provide clean energy to about 350,000 homes.

Iraq’s PM has emphasized that improving the energy sector is a top priority, with plans to achieve self-sufficiency in gas and eliminate imports within a few years.
