UN Warns of Impending Famine Crisis Facing Over 1M Gazans, Urges G7 Action
The United Nations relief chief, Martin Griffiths, has issued a stark warning about the “preventable scourge” of famine, stating that more than one million people are expected to face death and starvation by the middle of July, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
Griffiths emphasized that conflicts in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, and beyond are spiraling out of control, pushing millions of people to the brink of starvation. He stressed that “only technicalities prevent famines from being declared, as people are already dying of hunger,” and called the situation a “preventable scourge” in the 21st century.
The UN official urged the G7 countries, including Italy, the UK, US, France, Germany, Japan, and Canada, to use their influence to help stop the impending famine. He warned that “waiting for an official declaration of famine before acting would be a death sentence for hundreds of thousands of people and a moral outrage.”
Highlighting the severity of the humanitarian crisis, Griffiths stated that in Gaza, more than one million people, or half the population, are expected to face death and starvation by mid-July.
In Sudan, at least 5 million people are also teetering on the brink of starvation, with communities in more than 40 hunger hotspots at high risk of slipping into famine in the coming month.
Griffiths emphasized that humanitarian aid alone is not the solution and urged the world to “stop feeding the war machines that are starving the civilians.” He called on the international community to prioritize the diplomacy that will give people back their futures.
