Rising Youth Unemployment in UK: Country Ranked Third in Europe for Youth Employment Crisis
——————————————-
A recent report reveals that the UK is facing a severe youth employment crisis, ranking third among wealthy European countries in terms of the high number of young people either unemployed or outside of education and training.
According to The Guardian, the Resolution Foundation, a think tank, has warned that rising health issues among young people, particularly mental health problems, along with an ineffective benefits and job support system, are key factors contributing to the crisis. The report notes that the UK now has the third-highest rate of 18–24-year-olds who are neither in education, employment, nor training (NEET) among wealthy European nations, with only Italy and Lithuania ranked higher.
The Resolution Foundation further highlights that the number of young people aged 16 to 24 who are NEET has reached approximately one million, marking the highest figure in over a decade.
In addition, the report underscores that poor mental and physical health, especially among young adults, is exacerbating the problem. Many young people are unable to join the workforce or continue education due to health challenges, while the lack of sufficient vocational education and training opportunities further restricts their options.
Human rights and labor experts are urging the international community and policymakers to focus on implementing long-term solutions to ensure young people in the UK have access to sustainable employment, education, and training opportunities.
