Miami Muslim group backs Pope and Catholic Charities amid funding dispute

A Muslim community organization in Miami has expressed solidarity with the Catholic Church and Pope Francis following criticism of his stance on global conflicts, while also raising concerns over cuts to humanitarian funding in the United States.

In a public statement, the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations (COSMOS) said it supports the Pope’s calls for peace and nonviolence, describing them as values shared across religious traditions, including Islam and Christianity.

The group also voiced concern over the cancellation of an $11 million federal contract with Catholic Charities in Miami, which had funded shelter and care for unaccompanied migrant children, including refugees from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.

According to COSMOS Vice President Naveed Anjum, faith-based organizations play a critical role in supporting vulnerable communities regardless of background, and reductions in funding risk undermining essential humanitarian services.

The Archdiocese of Miami, led by Thomas Wenski, has previously highlighted the impact of the funding cut, noting its importance for migrant assistance programs.

The statement comes amid broader political tensions surrounding immigration and humanitarian policy, including criticism directed at the Pope’s positions by figures associated with U.S. President Donald Trump.

COSMOS said it would continue to work with Catholic and other faith leaders to promote interfaith cooperation, peace, and support for humanitarian efforts in the region.
