Taliban’s “Virtue and Vice” Law Tightens Social Controls in Afghanistan
………………
A report by an Afghan analysts network indicates that the Taliban’s “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law, in force for over a year, has significantly restricted daily life for both women and men. The law has led families to impose additional limitations on women, fearing detention or harassment, effectively curbing their mobility and enforcing male accompaniment in public spaces.
The legislation also grants extensive authority to local officials and “morality police,” who monitor women in schools, hospitals, and public areas. Men have faced rules on appearance and dress, including beard length and clothing compliance, with some losing employment for nonconformity.
According to the report, these measures have intensified social repression and consolidated Taliban control over personal and societal life, affecting the freedoms and behaviors of Afghan citizens across the country.
