Pakistan: Record-Breaking Rainfall Hits Multan, Emergency Imposed
Multan experienced a historic torrential downpour on August 27, breaking a 48-year rainfall record, Dawn Online Newspaper revealed yesterday.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) reported that Chungi No 9 disposal station recorded 172 millimeters of rain, while Kirri Jamandan received 137mm and Old Shujaabad Road saw 90mm. The previous record was 134.5mm set in 1976.
In response to the severe weather, Wasa Managing Director Khalid Raza Khan declared a rain emergency, overseeing ongoing drainage operations. Deputy Commissioner Waseem Hamid Sindhu inspected various areas to expedite drainage efforts.
Wasa urged the public to exercise caution during the storms, advising them to avoid electricity poles and waterlogged areas. Parents were warned to keep children indoors to ensure their safety. Additionally, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority issued alerts for continued heavy rainfall across southern and central Punjab through Saturday.
