WMO: The past eight years have been the hottest on record

A new United Nations report concluded that the past eight years have been the hottest on record, indicating that the world is now deepening into a climate crisis.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the report issued by the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shows how rising greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are driving sea level rise and melting ice to new levels and leading to an extreme rise in severe weather from Pakistan to Puerto Rico.

The “stern assessment” was published on the opening day of the UN COP27 climate summit in Egypt.

The report also stated that carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide recorded record levels in the atmosphere as emissions continued. The annual increase in methane, a potent greenhouse gas, was the highest ever.

“Emissions are still rising at record levels. This means that our planet is on its way to reaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible. We need to move from tipping points to tipping points of hope,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said before COP27.
