Americans for Democracy and Human Rights Organization in Bahrain sent a letter to the US Ambassador to Bahrain, Justin Sibiral, expressing several concerns about the ongoing deterioration of human rights in the country, most notably religious discrimination, particularly in regards to the Ashura commemoration, and the denial of health care to detainees.
“We remain deeply concerned about the lack of action by the US Embassy on a number of issues, particularly its failure to publicly condemn continued religious discrimination and the targeting of Shia clerics and preachers during Ashura,” the letter wrote.
“As you probably know, Bahrain has long systematically discriminated against the majority Shia community, and the way this political discrimination is manifested in the media, in school textbooks and through official corruption, nepotism, and deliberate and uneven development,” it added, pointing to their concerns regarding the suppression of the religious observance of the month of Muharram, especially Ashura. “
