WFP Warns Three-Quarters of Yemeni Families Cannot Meet Basic Food Needs

The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Yemen’s humanitarian situation remains extremely fragile, with three out of every four Yemeni families unable to meet their basic food needs amid worsening hunger, displacement and growing obstacles to humanitarian access.

The agency said it is currently providing assistance to around 1.5 million people in areas controlled by the Yemeni government, but access to several regions has become increasingly difficult following the closure of roads leading to Taiz and Hodeidah.

WFP also reported that its teams have been unable to reach areas controlled by Ansar Allah, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without food assistance they had previously received and raising further concerns about food security among vulnerable communities.

The agency warned that severe funding shortages could force it to suspend food assistance for around 150,000 people, most of them women and girls, if additional funding is not secured by the end of October.

The funding crisis comes as Yemen faces a new wave of displacement, with around 250,000 people reportedly displaced over the past two weeks. WFP said some displaced families in camps in Taiz and northern Yemen are facing extremely difficult conditions, with some going several days without adequate food or water.

The agency warned that limited funding and restricted humanitarian access could further deepen Yemen’s hunger crisis and expand the number of people in need of food assistance in the coming months.
