A fire ripped through a labor housing facility in Kuwait on Wednesday, killing at least 40 Indian workers and injuring over 50 more, Reuters reported yesterday, adding that most of the deceased were from the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The victims included individuals nearing retirement like 61-year-old Muralidharan Nair, who planned to return home after a long career in Kuwait, and young professionals like 29-year-old engineer Stephin Abraham Sabu, who was looking forward to a family visit in August.
The fire exposed the often-crowded living conditions faced by migrant workers in Kuwait, many of whom come from Kerala, India. The Indian government is arranging a special flight to repatriate the bodies of the deceased.
