Syria: Fuel price hikes trigger widespread economic protests

A sharp increase in fuel prices across Syria has sparked widespread protests, road blockades, and transport strikes, with demonstrators expressing anger over worsening living conditions and economic policies under the government of Abu Mohammad al-Julani.

According to reports, fuel prices, including gasoline, diesel, and household gas, rose by around 40%, prompting protests that began in northeastern provinces such as Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, and Raqqa before spreading to Aleppo, Idlib, and Suwayda.

Protesters blocked major roads, including the M5 highway, and disrupted fuel transportation routes, while public transport workers in Aleppo suspended operations. The measures also affected agricultural and service sectors.

Officials attributed the price increases to factors including global oil market fluctuations and refinery maintenance, describing the decision as temporary. Meanwhile, al-Julani has pointed to economic growth plans and a transition toward a free-market system, promising improved living conditions in the future.

However, delays in farmers’ payments and rising daily expenses have continued to fuel public dissatisfaction, with observers saying the protests reflect broader economic grievances beyond fuel prices, including demands for improved living standards and social justice.
