Maldives’ President: Islam central to national identity and cultural sovereignty

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that Islam represents the foundation of the country’s cultural sovereignty and national independence, emphasizing that maintaining the Maldives as an Islamic nation is a key element of its national identity.

Muizzu made the remarks during a ceremony held at Hulhumalé Central Park marking 900 years since the arrival of Islam in the Maldives. He highlighted the role of Islam in shaping Maldivian society, values, and traditions throughout history.

The president said Islamic principles have contributed to strengthening social stability, trust, and cohesion, stressing the importance of preserving religious values and passing them on to future generations.

Muizzu also referred to the historical role of Islam in promoting human dignity and equality, noting that the faith has remained a central component of Maldivian heritage.

He recalled historical resistance against Portuguese influence, saying that the Maldivian people’s commitment to their beliefs played a role in preserving the country’s religious and cultural identity.

In his remarks, Muizzu called on citizens to maintain their faith while facing contemporary challenges and to support national development while preserving what he described as the Islamic character of the Maldives.
