Italy: Muslim community voices anger after Quran desecration incident
————————————————
A video showing an Italian political activist burning and tearing a copy of the Quran during a live broadcast has sparked widespread condemnation among members of the Muslim community in Italy, particularly those of Moroccan origin, as well as civil society activists.

The incident was met with criticism from Muslim representatives and community members, who described the act as a deliberate provocation targeting one of Islam’s most sacred texts. At the same time, activists called for calm and responsible responses to prevent the incident from escalating social tensions or serving the aims of those seeking confrontation.

Following the incident, an open letter addressed to Italian media and public opinion stressed that attacks on religious symbols should not be used to fuel hatred or deepen divisions within society.

The signatories condemned deliberate insults against religious beliefs and symbols, while emphasizing the need to distinguish between freedom of expression and actions intended to spread hostility against religious communities.

They called on political and social institutions in Italy to confront hate speech and prevent religious issues from being exploited for political or media purposes that could increase polarization.

The statement also urged media outlets to adopt professional and responsible coverage of such incidents and avoid practices that amplify provocative acts or contribute to the spread of division.

Muslim community representatives and civil activists reiterated the importance of protecting coexistence, respecting religious beliefs, and addressing such incidents through legal and peaceful channels.
