Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans for legislation that would ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs by female students in schools and introduce limits on the number of foreign students allowed in each classroom.

According to Reuters, the proposed measures have triggered strong reactions from Muslim communities in Italy and civil rights groups across Europe, with critics arguing that the restrictions could affect religious freedoms and deepen the marginalization of minority communities.

The draft law would also require non-Italian parents whose children face difficulties integrating into the education system to learn the Italian language as part of efforts to improve school integration.
