Ancient Underground Canal System in Kirkuk Added to World Heritage List

The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources announced yesterday that the Lower Kahreez Haji Beykhan, an ancient underground canal system in Kirkuk, has been included on the World Heritage List for Irrigation Structures, Shafaq News reported. This announcement was made during the 75th Executive Council meetings of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) in Sydney, Australia, held from September 1 to 7.

The Ministry highlighted the engineering significance of the Lower Kahreez Haji Beykhan, which was constructed 150 years ago. The system showcases advanced techniques in water management, designed to supply both agricultural and domestic water needs. Its construction required a deep understanding of land slope and groundwater levels, reflecting Iraq’s rich history in irrigation. The recognition is seen as a major achievement for the country, emphasizing the importance of preserving its historical irrigation systems for future generations.
