The prisoners of conscience are demanding better living conditions and an end to the systematic use of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in the kingdom’s detention facilities.
Since January, detainees in the notoriously brutal Jaw Prison have been subjected to increasingly repressive measures, which include being denied access to medical care, being confined to their cells and having family visits severely limited. Prisoners are also forced to endure beatings and solitary confinement as punishment for observing Shiite religious occasions.
Meanwhile, conditions in the country’s Dry Dock Detention Center were recently described as ‘intolerable’ and ‘tragic’.
