India: Shia leaders in Hyderabad call on government to secure Muharram and Husseini processions

Religious leaders in the largest Indian Shia-populated city of Hyderabad have urged their government to show more care and consideration for the coming holy month of Muharram and the revival of the Husseini rituals.

The Shia leaders issued a joint statement, today, Monday, seen by Shia Waves Agency in which they called on the government to, “secure the Husseini rituals and processions”, stressing that, “There should be a governmental effort for these rituals as the case is with the Hindu festivals.”

The statement added that the government should “Allocate 100 crore rupees to restore Husseiniyas across the state.”

The Shia leaders indicated that, “The tragic anniversary of Ashura must be the priority of the government due to its greatness, and as it is special to its Shia citizens.”

According to media reports, the Shia Muslims in India commemorate the rituals of Ashura for 10 consecutive days, and moderate Hindus join them to honour the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussein, peace be upon them.
