Shias and Buddhists in Indian state of Ladakh demand the state be declared independent

Hundreds of Shia Muslims and Buddhist citizens, in the capital of the Indian state of Ladakh (Leh), participated in popular protests, calling for the state to be declared an independent territory from Jammu and Kashmir.

Today, Thursday, the Indian newspaper ‘the Statesman’ said, in a report translated by Shia Waves Agency, that “a number of political and social organizations in Ladakh state, demanded to declare the state located on the (Tibet) plateau an independent region under Article VI of the Indian constitution.”

The report added that “this is the first time that Shia Muslims and Buddhist citizens have united, to unify their main demands, which include the establishment of a full and independent province in Ladakh, obtaining constitutional guarantees, and providing job opportunities for the unemployed youth.”
