Al-Abbas Holy Shrine restores ancient Quran pages written in Kufic script

In a significant cultural preservation effort, the Intellectual and Cultural Affairs Department at the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine has launched a restoration project for rare pages of the Holy Quran, dating back to the 4th century AH and written in the historic Kufic script.
Laith Lutfi, Director of the Al-Fadl Center for the Conservation and Preservation of Manuscript Heritage and Documentary Archives, said the center is dedicated to safeguarding invaluable manuscripts stored in the shrine’s library. Among them are 21 pages of the Quran, featuring verses from Surahs Al-Hijr and An-Nahl, distinguished by intricate Islamic ornamentation and classical calligraphy.

The restoration process follows rigorous scientific assessments to determine the condition of the manuscripts. A specialized team of skilled conservators is carrying out the work, ensuring both the physical integrity and spiritual legacy of the artifacts are preserved for future generations. This project underscores the shrine’s commitment to cultural heritage, reviving centuries-old Islamic art and scholarship while contributing to the broader mission of protecting historical treasures.
