Global population hits 8.09 billion in 2024

The global population grew by over 71 million people in 2024, reaching 8.09 billion on New Year’s Day, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

This 0.9% increase marks a slight slowdown compared to 2023, which saw a 75 million rise. Worldwide, there are projected to be 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths per second in January 2025.

In the United States, the population increased by 2.6 million in 2024, reaching 341 million. The Census Bureau expects one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.4 seconds in January, with international migration adding one person every 23.2 seconds.

Combined, births, deaths, and migration will result in a net population increase every 21.2 seconds. Since 2020, the U.S. population has grown by 9.7 million (2.9%), slower than the 7.4% growth recorded in the 2010s, the lowest since the 1930s.
