Holy Karbala to launch Iraq’s largest flyover project to ease traffic congestion

The Governor of Holy Karbala, Engineer Nassif Jassem Al-Khattabi, held a meeting with top official to discuss plans to implement Iraq’s largest flyover project to address traffic congestion in the city.

According to a statement from the governor’s media office, the flyover will span 6 kilometers in length and rise 22 meters high, connecting Abbas District to Maytham Al-Tammar Street and extending to Fatima Al-Zahra Flyover, including all intersections.

The project will involve coordination to resolve conflicts with water, sewage, electricity, and telecommunications lines, with alternative routes planned during construction. The initiative will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Construction and Housing, following approval from the Prime Minister.

Additionally, the meeting discussed bringing in international firms to develop a comprehensive urban map outlining Karbala’s infrastructure needs until 2050, with a focus on transportation planning.

This project is expected to significantly improve Karbala’s transportation infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion—especially during mass pilgrimage events—and enhance the city’s urban planning through modern designs and smooth execution strategies.
