Iraq kills ISIS ‘Governor’, 8 senior leaders in major military operation

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani announced on Tuesday the killing of ISIS’s top leader, known as “Iraq Governor” along with eight senior leaders of the group in a military operation targeting jihadist remnants. The operation took place in the Hamrin Mountains, an area known for ISIS activity.

Despite ISIS’s territorial defeat in 2017, the group has continued to carry out attacks in regions like Diyala, Salahaddin, Kirkuk, and Nineveh. Recent Iraqi airstrikes in Salahaddin province have killed 11 ISIS members since mid-October.

Last week, a separate airstrike in Kirkuk eliminated ISIS’s provincial leader. This follows an August operation in Anbar province that killed 16 ISIS militants, including four leaders, in collaboration with U.S. forces.
